Heritage Holiday Trends 2026: Tartan, Bows, and Deep Reds for an Artful Christmas
This year, the trend forecasts finally agree with the rest of us. Holiday decorating in 2026 is leaning toward nostalgia, tradition, & a look that is warm and personal rather than perfectly matched. If you live with art, not just around it, that is very good news.
I have been watching the forecasts since summer & several of them line up beautifully with the heritage pieces I already make. Here are the looks worth embracing, how to style them, & a few pieces from The Teal Leopard that fit each one.
You do not need to start over. The most welcome trend of all is mixing what you love with a few new details.

Tartan: Old as the Highlands, New Again
Long before it was a trend, tartan was a way of saying where you came from. Tartan & vintage decor both sit among the top looks for 2026 & it is easy to see why. Plaid carries instant warmth and a sense of history, from the mantel to the dinner table.

How to use it without overdoing it:
-
-
- - Pick one tartan in a deep red, green, or navy and repeat it in two or three small places, such as a table runner, a pillow, & a ribbon.
- - Let the rest of the room stay quiet. Candlelight, greenery, & aged wood make tartan look richer.
- - Mix it with texture. Linen, velvet, & wool all sit well beside plaid.
-
I am working on tartan designs for placemats, napkins, & pillow covers, so keep watch for those. Until then, the Rustic Red & Tan stocking & the Highland Cow Heritage Tote carry a little of the glen indoors.
Candlelit, Not Shiny: Deep Reds & Antique Gold
Classic red & green are not going anywhere, but this year they have gone moody: wine red, mulberry, forest green, chocolate brown, antique gold, & warm bronze. Think candlelit rather than shiny.
The easiest place to try it is the mantel. Hang a few stockings in rich reds & golds, add greenery, and let the candles do the rest.

- The Vintage Look Red & Gold stocking is made for homes full of traditions passed down through the years.
- The Homespun Red & Gold stocking is a smaller, cozier take on the same palette.
- The "Starlight Supper" Candlelight Still Life Christmas cards pair that warm glow with a star in the window, ideal for someone who loves an old-world Christmas.
Bows Beyond the Gift Box
A bow is a small promise that something is worth opening. In 2026 they have wandered far from the top of the present. Tie them onto wreaths, garland, chair backs, candle holders, & the branches of the tree.
A few ways to style them:
- Use wide, soft ribbon in velvet or satin for a romantic look, or plaid ribbon to echo the tartan trend.
- Repeat one ribbon color in several places so the room feels pulled together.
- Let the wrapping paper do half the work. A patterned wrap with a simple bow looks finished with almost no effort.
- My Celtic & Botanical wraps were designed for exactly this. The English Christmas Rose "Winter Rose" wrap is soft & romantic, while Celtic Midnight Holly and Medieval Midnight bring deep blue, gold knotwork, and holly for a more storybook feel.

Woodland Creatures & a Little Whimsy
Every good story has a creature in it. Bears, snowy owls, swans, & plenty of playful details are turning up in 2026 holiday decor, and they add personality to a tree without making it feel themed.

My Winter Court ceramic ornaments each carry a name & a bit of lore, at $20 each:
- Syltharion, the Winter Stag for woodland majesty
- Orrwyn, the Snowy Owl for moonlit wisdom
- Lirael, the Frost Fox for a bit of cunning charm
- Brambletine, the Hedgehog for quiet strength
- Kaelvor, the Arctic Wolf for loyalty & northern lights
- Myrathis, the Snow Leopard for silent winter beauty
- They also make lovely stocking stuffers for anyone who loves an animal & a good story.
Make It Personal

The homes that feel most beautiful this year will not be the ones with the biggest trees or the most perfectly matched decor. They will be the ones with a story in every corner.
For a keepsake stocking, the XL Christmas Stocking with appliqued initial is made for someone who has been extra good this year. It is a one-of-a-kind piece that can anchor the whole mantel.
Bring the Season Home
Holidays are really about creating a feeling, and this year that feeling is warm, nostalgic, & a little bit storybook.
So light a candle. Sit quietly for a moment. Choose one or two of these looks, add the pieces you love, & let your home tell its own story.
