Tartan vs. Plaid: The Difference (and How to Decorate with Tartan This Christmas)

Tartan has been making rooms feel warmer for centuries, and it has never once asked for a dimmer switch.

Picture it: candlelight, a pot of tea, and a table set in deep navy and crimson that makes everyone linger one course longer. That’s the feeling, and it’s easier to get than you think.

First, tartan or plaid?
Here’s a secret Scotland has been keeping. Long before tartans belonged to clans, they belonged to places. Weavers colored their wool with whatever grew nearby, and since the plants and minerals changed from glen to glen, so did the colors. A tartan could tell you where it was woven before it ever told you who you were. Clan tartans only arrived in the early 1800s. In North America, “plaid” became the everyday word for any checked pattern, so every tartan is plaid to most of us, but not every plaid has a Highland heart.

  1. Start at the table. Placemats and napkins are the easiest way to bring tartan in without committing to a whole room. Layer them over a plain linen runner and let the pattern do the talking.
  2. Choose your mood. Navy and crimson feel classic and a little dramatic. Forest and burgundy lean cozy-cottage Christmas. Both still look right in January, which is the real test.
  3. Mix scales, not just colors. Pair tartan with a solid, a stripe or a small check so the pattern has room to breathe. Add a pillow cover to a favorite chair and the whole corner feels intentional.

Meet the Highland Plaid Collection

I designed this collection for exactly that feeling: 100% woven cotton placemats and cloth napkins, printed with my tartan designs in navy & crimson and forest & burgundy, made to be used, not saved for best. Set the table, light a candle, and let the tartan do the rest. Matching pillow covers are new this week.
